Gavin Lamplough was appointed Bandmaster in May 2011 having previously been Birmingham Citadel Band’s Principal Cornet.  He succeeded his father, Graham, as Bandmaster of BCB when Graham retired after the 2011 Canadian Tour.

Gavin came to the Citadel with his family in 1997.  On leaving the Royal Northern College of Music in 2000, Gavin returned to the Midlands to work as a freelance trumpet player working with orchestras such as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and in theatres around the UK. Gavin was awarded the Fellow of Trinity College London (FTCL) for solo performance in 2019.

He is proud to be a member of the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army for whom he is the Principal Cornet. He has also played with a number of the Salvation Army’s other premier Brass Bands including the Household Troops Bands on Soprano Cornet.  He is a founder member of the Salvation Army brass ensemble Vision Brass and feels privileged to perform for the Salvation Army around the UK whether as a soloist or as a member of the ISB or BCB.

He is privileged to serve on the staff of the Salvation Army’s Territorial (National) Music School where he conducts one of the brass bands.  Gavin has also travelled to other countries around the world as an international guest at Salvation Army Music Schools, most recently visiting schools in the USA and in Germany.

He also conducts a number of non-Salvation Army ensembles and still maintains some professional work as a trumpet player. In addition he often guests with non-Salvation Army Brass Bands, most notably playing Solo Cornet with the Cory Band when they won the National Championships at the Royal Albert Hall.

Gavin is currently Director of Music at Stafford Grammar School; an independent school in Staffordshire which has over 60% of the school population playing a musical instrument and performs over 35 concerts each academic year.
